3rd Access Bank Lagos Marathon: Organizers Sets Ball Rolling

The countdown to the 3rd edition of the Access Bank Lagos Marathon has began with the unveiling of the event on Thursday November 2nd 2017 at the Corporate Headquarter of the major sponsor, Access Bank PLC, in Victoria Island, Lagos State.

In his opening remark during the unveiling, President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) Mallam Ibrahim Gusau thanked the sponsors.

He said the competition have been getting commendations from the IAAF with Lagos having the best marathon route in the world, adding that the international body has certified the 2018 Access Bank Lagos Marathon as a qualification competition for the Commonwealth Games holding same year.

He however said it will be joy for the federation to see that at least six marathons are held across the country in a year.

For CEO and Group Managing Director, Access Bank PLC, Herbert Wigwe, the bank will continue to support the event as long as the Project Consultant for the Access Bank Lagos City Marathon wants them to.

According to Wigwe, the competition is showcasing Lagos and Nigeria’s potentials in general to the outside world and being a partner, for them was the right step to take.

However, General Manager of the competition, Yusuf Ali who highlighted the 2nd edition said all hands must be on deck to make the 2018 edition better then the 2017.

He added that the next stage is to get the Silver label status but getting the gold is not far fetch if the body gets it right next year.

“With proper organization, the next stage for us is to get the silver label status, but nothing stops us from getting the Gold Label if we can do it right and by so doing, putting everything on ground and following the rules and regulations of the IAAF.”

He however added that the Access Bank Lagos Marathon which has been adjudge as the fastest growing tournaments in the world is ranked 2nd in Africa while the Cape Town Marathon is number 1.
