-After Lassa Fever Kills Nurse, Mortuary Attendant.
Ogun State Government is finalizing a plan to create an Isolation Centre at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, following the last Monday’s fresh outbreak of Lassa fever which has killed two of the hospital’s staff.
The State Health Commissioner, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye who made this known to newsmen in Abeokuta, said that government had reactivated its surveillance system to contain the spread of the disease in the state.
Ipaye said the fresh cases of Lassa Fever were confirmed after the blood sample of those killed taken to Laboratory of the World Health Organization in Lagos turned out positive.
The commissioner added that government acted immediately by being responsive and proactive with necessary steps to prevent the spread of the virus.
According to him,” the state government has also sensitized and alerted the medical and health workers in the state on the outbreak of the disease”.
Two of the staff at the Federal Medical Centre, Idi Aba, Abeokuta, including a Mortuary Attendant and Assistant Chief Nursing Officer were killed by the disease while another nurse suspected to have been infected by the disease has been placed under observation.
The emergency treatment unit of the hospital, where the two nurses worked has been deserted by health workers since the news of fresh case broke-out.
