AFN Raises Alarm Over IAAF Tourney

Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) have raised alarm that none of the country’s athletes has booked a ticket to this year’s IAAF World Championship in London.

AFN technical director, Navy Commodore Omatseye Nesiama (rtd) said the calendar of activities for this year was already out and stressed that only athletes who make the right qualification marks would be included on the roster to London.

Nesiama, though, also disclosed that one of the programmes lined up by the athletics body for the country’s athletes to qualify for London 2017 is the AFN Golden League.

“As it stands now, no Nigerian athlete has qualified for the London 2017 World Athletics Championship. Any of our athletes who hope to compete in London has to meet the standard this year.

“The era of picking athletes based on performance of previous years is gone. Apart from the Golden League, we also plan to enter our athletes in international competitions within and outside Africa. We will pick only those who made the qualification mark this year,” Nesiama said.
