Former African champion and a member of the Local Organising Committee for the Asaba 2018 African Senior Athletics Championships Falilat Ogunkoya has said the competition would be a success.
Ogunkoya a multiple gold medallists at previous editions of the competition said she is happy with what Delta State has put in place to host the event.
With the host venue, Stephen Keshi Stadium now virtually completed, the laying of tartan tracks has commenced with experts from China supervising the exercise.
Already a Grand prix has been fixed for July 18 to carry out a proper test run of all the facilities that would be used for Asaba 2018.
The 21st African Senior Athletics Championships which is expected have over 52 countries in attendance is billed to take place from August 1 to 5.
Ogunkoya who represented Nigeria at all major athletics competitions said she is sure that the championships would leave a lasting impression on athletics in Africa.
“I am very happy to see Nigeria hosting Africa’s biggest athletics event again after a long time. Delta State government has shown that they are willing and capable of staging a world class event and that is very commendable.
“With what I have seen in terms of equipment and other logistics already in place, I have no doubt this will be the best African Championships ever organised,” she said.
