It was a devastating moment for the Ogun State Handball Association at the ongoing Under 12 and Under 15 National Handball Championship in Lagos, as majority of its players were sent-packing from the tournament for allegedly presenting over-age players for screening .
The State Under 12 male side are the worst hit with just five players cleared to play against Sokoto State which they lost woefully 8-26 points in the match played over the weekend while their female Under 15 counter-part have just six players remaining as against normal seven players for every team in the game.
Ogun Under-12 male side despite playing with just five players narrowly lost to Kebbi State by 10-11 points in their second match and defeat at the championship, with fans applauding the talents in the team.
Host Lagos State took advantage of the highly depleted Ogun female Under 15 side with short one and no substitution ,by thrashing their opponent 28-8points in their first match, while Ogun Under 12 female team over-whelmed their Ekiti State opponents 26-3 point in another match at the age-grade championship.
The State Handball Association’s Secretary, Olalekan Sanusi who spoke with Sports Day on the development, said it had killed the moral of the remaining players in the camp, blaming the situation on sports politics in Nigeria.
