Chairman of Aiteo Cup finalists Akwa United, Paul Bassey, has maintained they will not be worried when several of their top stars quit the Uyo club for greener pastures after Sunday’s Cup final in Lagos.
Akwa United have already lost Moses Ebiyie and lbrahim Alhassan to European clubs and several of the players who featured for the home-based Eagles recently like Afeez Aremu and Gabriel Okechukwu are in line to follow suit soon.
Bassey told SCORENigeria his club will forge ahead in the absence of these stars.
“No, I won’t be worried if some of these players leave, rather I will celebrate them and I felicitate with them,” he told SCORENigeria
“We are not worried because we have dealt with the worse. Our last four matches in the league we did not have them. I shouted and they said if you have four players, they will postpone our matches and I went there, they said the rule has been changed to six.
“We have already suffered it and we do not have a choice.
“We started the Aiteo Cup without our best players, so we just have to manage and on the other side I can even come out to say it’s unfair.
“Look at the WAFU Cup, it was supposed to be a training ground to fortify ourselves for CHAN, and we have top clubs in the league who were out – Enyimba were out, Lobi, El Kanemi, Pillars – but they didn’t go there and then a club who are still struggling to make do after losing out in the league, they come and bring out five players, I thought it was not fair.
“Whatever reason they gave, fine but we have learnt our lessons and all the coaches have to make sure that they have a credible bench, at least two good players in every position.”
