Imo State deputy governor, Chief Eze Madumere has urged Nigerian football referees to improve their performances and be above board, in order to help develop the round leather game in the country.
Madumere gave the charge while speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2017 conference of Nigerian Referees Association (NRA) in the state capital, Owerri; during which he further stated that the beauty of football lies in proper interpretation of the rules.
While NRA national president, AhlajiTadeAzeez appealed to Imo State government to be in full support of the body and football clubs they are sponsoring, Madueme admitted that refs also face challenges from unruly fans at match venues.
The deputy governor added: “I understand the challenges of the welfare of the body. I understand the pain of the hazard you face every day at the hands of football fanatics.
“It is also because of my love for the game that I have been sponsoring my community football competition for about 25 years now. This is to help in fishing out and developing great talents in the game.”
