Enyimba of Aba goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa has thrown a challenge at Barcelona megastar, Lionel Messi, as the shot-stopper says he will not be scared of taking on the Argentine captain if he is fielded for the Super Eagles’ final group match at this year’s World Cup.
Nigeria and Argentina will do battle for the fifth time in a World Cup group match on June 26 and, though, Ezenwa is yet to cement a spot as first choice for the global soccer showpiece, the home-based Eagles captain says he is not scared of facing Messi.
In fact, the former Sunshine Stars of Akure and FC Ifeanyiubah of Nnewi keeper further boasted that he is capable of stopping Messi from scoring, and says he is even looking forward to being the one in goal for the clash on June 26 in Saint Petersburg, Russia.
Ezenwa stressed that he can hold his own if fielded to man the sticks against The Argies, who are rated among the top favorites to claim the ultimate prize at Russia 2018.
Ezenwa copped an injury in January at the 2018 CHAN but he appears back in contention for the World Cup countdown and, despite initial fears that he might be sidelined from the trip to Russia, says he is ready to excel if he gets the nod to man Nigeria’s posts at the Mundial.
“Yes, I can stop Messi (but) we play as a team always and collectively we have been doing well. That’s the mentality we are taking to the World Cup. If I get chosen by the coach, I will do my best always to stop any player from scoring,” Ezenwa said.
