Gateway United of Abeokuta recorded their first win of the season, after struggling to beat visiting Akwa-Starlets of Uyo 2-1 in a week three second-tier Nigeria National League (NNL) match played at Gateway International Stadium in the ancient town of Ilaro over the weekend.
The Ogun State-owned soccer outfit had started the season on a shaky note with the lone goal home defeat inflicted on them at their normal home venue, MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta by visiting Mountain of Fire and Miracle (MFM) FC of Lagos before securing the deserved away draw against Insurance in Benin City.
A late minute penalty converted by Tosin Folarin in the 85th minute saved the team’s yet another embarrassing moment after enterprising striker, Francis Olanrewaju was brought down in the opponents 18 yards box as the boys regained their winning formula.
The Rock City side took the lead in the 60th minute through an old war-horse attacking winger, Chidima Osemene’s powerful header before Akwa boys grabbed the equalizer through an own goal by Osas Okwuoghae who committed a defensive blunder in the 80th minute.
Both sides had approached the encounter gently, failing to convert their chances in the opening half before they came out strongly in the remaining half of the match.
