.Promotion Still Possible, Says Sports Commissioner

Ogun State House of Assembly is not comfortable with the performance of the Gateway United Football Club of Abeokuta in the ongoing Nigeria National

League (NNL) and has asked the team’s management to work harder to improve the position and secure promotion to the Nigeria Professional Football

League (NPFL) next season.

Gateway United currently in the 6th position with 47 points from 32 matches, need to win its remaining two home matches against Nnewi United and Warri

Wolves to compete for promotion with other contending clubs in the Nigeria’s second-tier division.

The House Youth, Sports and Employment Generation Committee Chairman, Ganiyu Oyedeji who expressed the concern on Tuesday in Abeokuta during the lawmakers over sight visit to the sports ministry and the club’s 2017 budget performance, tasked the team’s management led by Tunji Onatolu to justify the State

Government huge investment by getting promotion to the elite division.

The State Youths and Sports Commissioner, Afolabi Afuape had explained that the internal crisis among the sacked coaching crew led by Samuel Abimbola contributed seriously to the sudden poor performance of the team which started very well without a defeat in the first five matches of the season.

Afuape however assured that the team still stand good chances of securing promotion to play in the Nigeria’s top flight league by winning the remaining two home matches in the season.

He therefore called for the support of the corporate organizations and wealthy individuals to compliment the State Government effort at funding the club and sports in the state ,lauding Guaranty Trust Bank for bankrolling the State Principal Cup in the past five seasons to discover talented footballers among secondary schools in the state.
