Nigerian top female table tennis player, Funke Oshonaike has told her fans to be expecting something great in the $46,000 prize money International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour, Lagos Open serving off on March 10 at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
The outstanding ping-pong star told Sports Day that she would not disappoint her fans as she is confident that the Egyptians would not be any obstacle to Nigeria players.
At 39, the Germany-based athlete still believes she has what it takes to clinch the ITTF tournament, she has represented Nigeria at various international tournaments and up till now, she still has a lot to offer.
After two failed attempts, Oshonaike made the last four in 2013 but was knocked out in the quarter-final in 2014, but she is determined to lead Nigeria team to avenge against the visiting Egyptians when the tournament serves off.
The defending Women champion, Egypt’s Nadeen El-Dawlatly will not be available for this year edition following her knee injury, emerged as the somewhat surprise winner of the Women’s Singles event in 2014.
Winners of the open will qualify to compete in the Liebherr World Cup tournament later this year and Oshonaike says she is determined to be among the top placed players
“My fans should be expecting something good from me in this open, I believe this is the time for me to avenge against the Egyptians.
“Nothing should my fans be expecting from me than the gold, all the players coming to the country will know that we have first class players here,” Oshonaike told SportsDay.
