Kaduna and Sokoto States emerged winners of the maiden North West U-19 Volleyball Championships, with top spot respectively in the boys and girls categories at Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna.
Kaduna’s Kada Boys defeated Kebbi State 2-1 to win the male tournament sponsored by the boss of Nigeria Beach Volleyball Commission, Engineer Musa Nimrod, who is also chairman of Kaduna State Volleyball Association.
Katsina State defeated Zaria Army Academy to win bronze for the boys, while Rima Strikers of Sokoto State defeated Kebbi in the girls final, as Kada Babes of Kaduna finished third.
All top six teams went home with trophies, medals, sets of ball and a volleyball net courtesy of Engineer Nimrod Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports North West zonal coordinator, Alhaji Bode Durotoye said the annual competition will help the country discover new talents.
Kada Boys captain, Godwin Daniel attributed his side’s victory to dedication, determination and team-work on the part of all the players.
“We are happy to win, because out of many states we came first. This is the first time this team is winning a competition like this and we thank God for making it possible. We also thank the organisers for giving us the opportunity of show our talent.
“We will go back to continue training and prepare to do better in subsequent competitions, particularly the National Sports Festival scheduled for November this year,” Daniel said.
On his part, Rima Strikers captain, Sadia Suleiman expressed joy at the feat saying: “I’m very happy to win this trophy. We were able to win because of our training, cooperation, team work and the efforts of our coaches.”
