Moses Explains Early Retirement From Super Eagles

Chelsea of England winger, Victor Moses has explained that he decided to retire from the Super Eagles in order to accord younger Nigerian players opportunities to make their own mark in the national team.

Although he is just 27 years old, the former Crystal Palace and Wigan Athletic star opined that he has already achieved a lot with the Eagles, following appearances at the editions of the World Cup and gold medal at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

Having recently played all three matches for Nigeria at this year’s World Cup in Russia and scored the Eagles’ only goal in their 2-1 loss to Argentina, Moses reckons he should leave when the ovation is loudest.

Incidentally, his recent days in the Eagles have been replete with controversies, mostly on account of injuries and late arrivals in camp, but Moses also appears to have lost his place in Chelsea’s starting line up under their new coach, Maurizio Sarri.

Moses, who has come off the bench in both of Chelsea’s games so far this season, first in the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City and English Premier League win away to Huddersfield Town, got his first international cap in 2012.

The former England youth international, who previously played on loan from Chelsea at Liverpool, Stoke City and West Ham United, ended up gaining 37 caps and 12 goals for the Eagles, but says he is now leaving the stage for younger players to take over.

Moses explained: “I have experienced some of the best moments of my life wearing the Super Eagles shirt and have memories with me that will last a lifetime.

“However I feel that now is the right time to step away in order to be able to focus fully on club career and my young family as well as to allow the next generation of Super Eagle stars the opportunity to step up and to flourish.”
