Edo State governor, Godwin Obaseki has showered praises on the players, coaches and officials of Bendel Insurance FC of Benin City for getting closer to promotion into Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).
Although ‘Arsenal’ still have to go through the Super-8 contest of the lower division Nigerian National League (NNL) and place among the top four in order to seal they NPFL spot for next season, Obaseki is already celebraring the club’s giant strides.
Obaseki’s plaudits come after Insurance moved closer to elevation with with a 2-1 defeat of 3SC of Ibadan.
The encounter was concluded on Monday morning at University of Benin Sports Complex, after the original Sunday afternoon encounter was postponed due to bad weather.
With the 2-1 win, the Edo Arsenal secured three points needed to top the Table and now awaits NFF’s decision on the NNL Super 8 play off.
Obaseki received the team at the Government House in Benin and congratulated the management and players for defeating 3SC and for being on course to returning to the top-flight league.
Obaseki said the victory was another fulfillment of his administration’s promise to Edo people and residents.
“My joy knows no bound because of what you have done today. I congratulate you and congratulate myself. I say this because it is another promise kept.
“We promised Edo people that we would bring Bendel Insurance to its lofty status which we all will be proud off and make sure they go on to play in the Premier league.
“We have built a team and have a machinery that will win the premier league, I am giving the club the sum of N25m to show how grateful we are as a government,” Obaseki said.
