Prisons Staff School, Emotan College Win “Pits-Bull Schools Rugby Tournament

… ‘Deaf & Dumb’ Pupils Come Third

Prisons Staff School and Emotan Collage won the First “Pits-Bull Schools Rugby Tournament held on Tuesday 30 May 2017 at Emotan College grounds and carted away the prestigious trophy and medals on offer.

The Prison Staff School won the Boys category by defeating Ogbe Collage in the extra time of the nail biting Rugby encounter by 20 Points to 15 points, while Emotan College defeated Idia Collage in the finals of the Girls category by 25 points to 5 points.

The Asoro Grammar School came third in the Boys category by defeating Ihogbe Collage by 30 points to 25 points. While in the Girls category, Emotan Junior School defeated Ihogbe Collage by 10 points to nil.

Master Prosper Ehidiamen of Prisons Staff School was voted the Most Valuable Player of the Boys Tournament, while Miss Jenifer Ehigie of Emotan Collage won the Most Valuable Player in the Girls category.

The highlight of the Tournament was the Ihogbe Grammar School boys who featured nine deaf and dumb pupils in their team and went on to win the third place position in a Six Team Tournament of the Boys category.

According to the Head Coach and World Rugby Educator for Nigeria Mr. Ntiense Williams, “We are highly appreciative of the involvement of these pupils from Ihogbe School who were able to perform way beyond their able body counterparts from other schools. It is a welcome development to see deaf and dumb pupils join and perform on a very high standard”.

Said he, “We will carefully monitor their progress and hopefully push them through to the deaf and dumb International Rugby Tournament in the future”.

The Tournament had in attendance a representative of the “Nigerian Association Of Women in Sports” in the person of the National Financial Secretary Mrs. Grace Aburime who was representing her President Prof. Mrs. Adewaju and donated two Polo Shirts each to the best players from all of the Girls School that attended. She further used the opportunity to recruit all the eight Female Rugby Coaches in Edo State into their fold.

Mrs. Aburime who is a board member and founding Principal of the Schools Rugby in Edo State was also performing a dual role at the event as she represented the Chairman of the Edo State Rugby Association Hon. Frank Evbuowan who was unavoidable absent.

She used the occasion to encourage the students to take sports serious especially the girl child as she is a direct product of sports in NigeriMrs. Grace Aburime, you may remember is Nigeria’s former All Africa Games Gold medalist in the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m & 4x400m Ghana Nigeria Team of 1973 – 1975,

Aunty Emilia Edet being her senior.

The “Pits-Bull Schools Rugby Tournament was in celebration of one of the Rugby Coach and prime mover of the Edo State Schools Rugby program Mr. Jeremiah Igbuwe who sponsored the championship.
