Highly enterprising Kabiru Sodiya of Korata Boxing Club, Abeokuta has emerged as champion of the second edition of “Ogun Boxing Hall of Fame” competition, beating other young boxers over the weekend to the crown in the talent hunt pugilists’ competition.
Sodiya, who overwhelmed his opponent, Sodiq Popoola of Champion Boxing Club in the 69 kilogrammes category of the quarterly tournament held at the Alake Sports Centre, Ijeja, Abeokuta, exhibited great boxing skills which won the hearts of panel of the judges at the championship.
In other bouts, Ayobami Adekunle enjoyed easy ride over Rasaq Taiwo in the 49 kilogrammes while Hammed Odebiyi won by split decision against Tajudeen Ismaila in the 56 kilogrammes category of the event organized by Ogun State Boxing Association to discover talented boxers for the state.
Muyideen Adeleke defeated Toheeb Hazzan in the 60 kilogrammes category, Dayo Daniel beat Kasali Moshood in the 64 kilogrammes while Olajide Mayowa out-punched Mustapha Ismail in the 75 kilogrammes category.
In the female contest, Fatima Adesanya from Maselese Boxing Club knocked out her opponent, Iyabo Ajisafe of Three Stars Boxing Club in the 51 Kilogrammes, Ganiyat Jubril also beat Mistura Oyeneye in the 56 Kilogrammes while Boluwatife Olushina defeated Damilola Shodipe in the 60 kilogrammes.
The State Director of Sports, Adesola Faleti speaking with Sports Day shortly after the tournament, expressed satisfaction with standard displayed by the young boxers while lauding the Governor Ibikunle Amosun’s administration for supporting the State Boxing Association to organize the quarterly talents hunt boxing tournament to sustain the state leading role in the game in Nigeria.
Faleti added that the five more editions of the competition will be organized with each winner of the series, boxing for honour in the Champions of Champions contest to determine those that will be included in the eventual list for the Team Ogun ahead of the national sports festival.
He promised that boxers would be properly groomed by the sports councils’ coaching crew to win laurels for the state at the sports festival and other major national competitions.
