World Federation of Elite Marshal Art (WFM) plans to organise the first Kick Boxing tournament in Nigeria in 2017.
President of the WFM in Nigeria, Samson Momoh told SportsDay that a specific date for the tournament is yet to be decided.
According to Momoh, a Hall of Famer in worldwide martial arts in Canada and a former professional kick boxer in Malaysia, the tournament is open to both male and female and is from ages four and above.
Momoh also disclosed that aside from the tournament they plan to hold in Nigeria, the WFM will also organize two tournaments in Dubai and Italy next year.
He said: “We are planning to organize the first WFM Kick Boxing tournament in Nigeria. So hopefully we can start off by developing the kids and we see how it goes from there.
“The tournament is open to male and female and the age range is from four years and above. The reason why we decided to make it from age four is because here in Nigeria, our athletes are too old.
“Most of our athletes discover their talents at an old age. There are those who discover their talent at a young age but no one to support them which is a problem. So what we intend to do is to work on this issue and find a solution to it.”
“Apart from the tournament here in Nigeria, we will be holding two Kick Boxing events in Dubai and Italy in 2017. The one in Dubai comes up in February while the one in Italy is billed for July.”
He went on to state that they will be holding seminars to sensitize Nigerians about the tournament.
“First, we need to let the government know what we are all about and we work on some seminars, bring people from outside like the one coming up in January in the United States of America, we plan to have something like that here in Nigeria.
“So for the main time we will work on seminars and see how it goes. And with this upcoming tournament, the government will be aware.”
