13th African Games: Nigeria ends track and field with fourth lowest medal haul ever

Date:

Team Nigeria track and field athletes ended their campaign at the 13th African Games with 22 medals made up of 11 gold, six silver and five bronze medals to finish top of the medal table for the 11th time in 13 appearances at the Games.

A remarkable feat for the athletes who defied all the odds to make it to the podium.

Curiously, the performance also show a marginal improvement on the decline that started in 2011 when the team hauled a total of 21 medals, equalling the lowest achieved in 1978.

The team to the Accra Games has now hauled the fourth lowest medals for Team Nigeria track and field in the history of the games.

After winning 18, 19 and 21 medals in 1965, 1973 and 1978 respectively albeit they still topped the medal table except in 1973, there was a huge leap to 27 medals in 1987.

The team recorded an all-time highest of 38 in 1991, then 32 in 1995 but with a record 15 gold medals, 24 in 1999, 33 and  24 in 2003 and 2007 respectively.
