Tianjin Teda of China midfielder, John Mikel Obi has received strong words of encouragement to carry on with the Nigerian national team until the Africa Cup of Nations, and probably call it quit after lifting the trophy next year in Cameroon.
This morale-boosting charge is coming from no less a person than Mikel’s coach in the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, who sports247.ng reports believes that the skipper should be able to stick out until the end of Cameroon 2019.
Rohr stated as much during a sports programme on a popular cable television last weekend, in which the Franco-German soccer tactician admitted that Mikel has found the going tough for both club and country in recent months due to injury issues.
The former Bayern Munich defender advised Mikel to programme himself for a national team swansong at AFCON 2019, where the coach believes the Eagles’ captain could honorable bow out with the continental soccer diadem under his shoulder.
Rohr said: “We know that fitness and injuries are the big issues Mikel is facing, but we want to encourage him to try and make it to the Nations Cup, they bow out by winning the trophy.
“It all depends on how he can keep his fitness, his commitment and psychology. We can try as much as we can, we can help him run a soft programme, but it all depends mostly on him”
