President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Hon. Daniel Igali has described late Olajide Fashikun as a patriot, an exceptional journalist and a friend to athletes.
The late sports journalist, who carved a niche for himself in investigative journalism, on Sunday in Abuja, passed on after a brief illness at the age of 53.
Until his demise, Fashikun was the Managing Editor of www.gongnews.net, an online news outlet. He was also the Director General of Nigeria Sports Development Fund Initiative (NSDFI), a body saddled with the responsibility of raising training grants for elite athletes ahead of the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
“I received the news of the demise of this patriot with great shock,” Igali said.
“Jide was not just a personal friend, but also a friend to the athletes, working closely with the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, and we were hopeful some of our elite athletes will benefit from the NSDFI ahead of the 2020 Olympic Games.
“As a sports journalist, he was fearless and exceptional in the discharge of his duties.
“Nigeria has lost a patriot in jide.
“I pray that God will give his family, the sporting fraternity and the nation at large the fortitude to bear this painful loss,” the World and Olympic champion said.
Aside being an accomplished sports journalist, Fashikun was also a successful handball player, representing Nigeria at various competitions.
He was a a former chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Kwara State chapter.
His remains was on Wednesday committed to mother earth in his hometown Obbo-Aiyegunle, in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State.
