Imama To Monitor U-20 National Team In Niger Republic

Players in Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles have received another incentive to excel at the African U-20 Cup of Nations in Niger Republic, as they have also been promised spots in the under-23 squad.

So soon after Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr promised to keep his eyes on the under-20 team during this month’s competition, the Franco-German gaffer has stated further his assistant, Imama Amapakabo will also watch the lads.

Coach Paul Aigbogun’s squad have thus been boosted with the possibility of rapid promotions not only to the Eagles, but also chances of being in the forthcoming ‘Dream Team 7.’

Imama has been picked to handle the next under-23 squad, which means he will keep tabs on Aigbogun’s lads, while Rohr also goes about keeping his promise to involve at least one of them in matches against Seychelles and Egypt next month.

Imama will lead the Olympic team for an U23 AFCON qualifier against Libya next month in the absence of Rohr’s first assistant, Salisu Yusuf, who is under suspension over allegations of cash for shirts in the home-based Eagles last year.

To set his plans in motion, Imama will meet with Rohr in Enugu this weekend, where both coaches travelled to watch continental matches involving Lobi Stars and Rangers International.

Imama will then meet with egg heads in the technical department of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday in Abuja to discuss his programme for the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations qualifier against Libya, which will be played between March 20 and 26.

The Flying Eagles, who won their first match at this year’s U-20 AFCON 2-0 against Burundi, will battle South Africa on Tuesday, before ending their group games versus the hosts, Niger Republic on Friday, February 8.

Aigbogun said he wants to win his first two matches, in order to book a semi-final ticket and pick a slot to the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland, for which Rohr says all the players now have additional incentives for them to shine.

Rohr stated: ”One of them will be able to join us for the friendly against Egypt but there’s also the U23 the same time, which is done by my assistant Imama.

”So, there are two possibilities to see them and I think they have the motivation to do very well in Niger. One of them will be invited.”
