Super Eagles coach, Gernot Rohr has hinted at the assurance that Middlesbrough of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi will make his team to the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, simply because the Nigerian team needs the player’s influence and personality.
Although Rohr acknowledged that no player should be treated as a sacred cow in the squad, the Franco-German gaffer believes the Nigerian team will need their captain’s experience at AFCON 2019.
Consequently, though Mikel is now playing for a second-tier club, Rohr is ready to stick with his skipper, who he believes can make a lot of difference when the chips come down.
That means Mikel is set to star at the African soccer showpiece for the fifth time, having also been there in 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2013.
Though Rohr affirmed that the former Lyn Oslo of Norway, Chelsea of England and Tianjin Teda of China star will need to fight for his place in the Eagles’ starting line-up, it would appear those words are a mere formality from the coach.
While stressing the need for all players to be up and doing in the countdown to Egypt 2019, the Eagles’ coach admitted Mikel’s role in the team is more than just showing his presence in camp, as his experience and leadership qualities will come in handy.
Rohr attested: ”We need good players, we need experience, we need Mikel in good fitness so he can bring something to the team.
”His experience again is very important and to be respected like a team if you play international tournaments or very important games.
“You need somebody like Mikel with his personality and influence on his teammates, sometimes also on the other people, it can be interesting.”
