The 30-year-old centre-back is training with the Rams
Derby are taking a look at the former Celtic and Hibernian centre back with a view to signing him for the rest of the season.
Ambrose is a free agent having left Hibernian last month and the 30-year-old has attracted interest from Bolton Wanderers, Nottingham Forest, Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic, as well as Turkish Super Lig side Akhisarspor.
He is training with the Rams, and Lampard said: “I have found him very nice, very good, very friendly, so as a character I think he would be great for us anyway.
“I watched a lot of him, I know his strengths. He is a tall defender, very committed, wants to play on the ball, and quick.
“It is just about making sure about his level of fitness and that both sides are happy it is going to work.”
Lampard has no fears about dipping into the market of free agents.
“It can be productive if you get the right one,” said Lampard.
Last month he signed his former Chelsea and England team mate Ashley Cole, who was a free agent.
“We know we have an area at centre back where we are certainly lacking cover/competition,” said Lampard.
“Trying to get people fit who may be haven’t been training is a challenge.
“With Ashley Cole, it has been a challenge, he is nearly there.
“Now we are talking about Efe Ambrose, who hasn’t been playing, so that will be a challenge but if it feels a challenge worth taking to improve the squad, I have no fears about doing it.”
Derby County boss Frank Lampard gives transfer update on Efe Ambrose
Derby County could soon complete the signing of defender Efe Ambrose, manager Frank Lampard confirmed after today’s 2-0 home victory over Hull City.
“We are talking, he is training with us. It is not done yet, it could be done soon,” said Lampard.
Derby are looking to add the former Celtic and Hibernian centre back to the squad as they bid to bolster options at centre back.
The 30-year-old is a free agent which means he can join a club outside a transfer window.
He triggered a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave Hibs in January although the club offered him a new deal.
Ambrose signed on loan for Hibernian in February 2017 and joined them on a permanent basis at the end of the season after his contract at Celtic expired.
His 51 caps for Nigeria saw him make their 2014 World Cup squad and he helped his country to win the African Cup of Nations tournament in 2013.
