New arrival of Henan Huishang of China, Chinwendu Ihezuo netted on her debut in the Oriental Nation, barely hours after sealing the deal from BIIK Kazygurt of Kazakhstan, but her goal could not take the team into the semi-finals of the Chinese Women FA Cup.
The match came a day after Ihezuo signed a two-year deal, which marked a change in scene for the 21-year-old Super Falcons attacker, who earlier joined Kazygurt in 2016.
Before making the switch to China, Ihezuo had been was outstanding for the Kazakhstan champions, scoring 16 goals in 20 appearances, including in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
However, following her title-winning feat with Nigeria at the 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations in Ghana, Ihezuo decided to end her two-year spell with the Shymkent based outfit.
Her move to Huishang meant Ihezuo could not be part the Falcons’ trip to Spain, where they continue their preparations for the FIFA Women’s World Cup with two additional build-up matches on Friday and Monday.
Ihezuo, who joins Falcons’ alternate captain, Onome Ebi at Huishang, becomes the fourth Nigerian to sign for a Chinese outfit since 2016, and she is now the fifth African over all to land in the world’s most populous nation, after Falcons’ teammate, Francisca Ordega, South Africa’s duo of Thembi Kgatlana and Linda Molthalo as well as Ghana’s Elizabeth Addo.
Ihezuo wasted no time to announce her arrival in China, scoring three minutes into her debut game for Henan, but her team failed to book a place in the semi-final of the Chinese FA Cup.
It was a different story for fellow-new arrival, Ordega, who struck late, in the 90th minute against Changchun, and her side, Shanghai WC won on penalties to become the first team to reach the semi-finals.
Ordega side won 4-3 on penalties, after her late equalisier ensured a 1-1 end to regulation time, but it was a different story for Ihezuo, as her goal could not save Henan, who lost 4-1 to Jiangsu.
While Ordega’s Shanghai will battle with Guangdong for a place in the final of the 2019 Chinese Women’s FA Cup, Jiangsu will face Wuhan.
