A member of the executive committee of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Chief Chidi Ofor Okenwa has rubbished speculation about lack of assistance to former national team captain and head coach, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, saying the star has received expert medical help.
Though a section of the sports media carried scary reports that Chukwu was abandoned by his first constituency, Okenwa, who is also chairman of the second-tier Nigeria National League (NNL) said all is well with the icon, and the ex-international is being treated in a very good hospital.
Okenwa, who is also the chairman of Enugu State Football Association, under whose banner Chukwu is technical director of the club he also captained as a player and then head coach, Rangers International of Enugu, added that ‘CCC’ is in good health and of sound spirit.
Okenwa further disclosed that he went to pay a visit to Chukwu at the behest of NFF president, Melvin Amaju Pinnick, and avail him of the exact state of health with Nigeria’s 1980 AFCON winning team captain.
Following his visit to the ex-defender, Okenwa stressed that Chukwu is in a condition and being adequately taken care of by health experts in a world class medical facility in Enugu State.
While thanking the government of Enugu State and management of Rangers for their prompt responses to Chukwu’s matter, Okenwa hinted that the legend would only be taken abroad for further treatment based on recommendations by doctors at the hospital where he was treated.
Okenwa said: “In all sincerity, I never knew this kind of hospital existed anywhere east of the Niger.
“It is a world –class facility with highly qualified medical doctors and nurses.
“The doctors are on top of Chukwu’s matter and I can tell you that I met ‘Chairman’ in a very stable condition.
“I met a Christian Chukwu that talks and eats normally and is of sound mind and spirit.
“I express appreciation to the management of Rangers International FC of Enugu and executive governor of Enugu State, Ifeanyi Lawrence Ugwuanyi for the prompt attention given to Chukwu’s medical issue.
“I also want to thank the President of NFF, Mr. Amaju Melvin Pinnick for his quick reaction after reading about the health issue.
“I want to assure Nigerians that their former captain, their legend, Christian Chukwu is in good condition and in good hands.
“I am assured by the doctors that there is no cause for alarm, and that if there is any need to fly him abroad, they would promptly so advise.”
