USA-based female striker, Courtney Dike has declared that she is in top form for heroics at this year’s FIFA Women’s World Cup, as she has been training hard with her club, in order to make Nigeria’s final roster to the Mundial in France.
Dike celebrated her return to the Super Falcons with a remarkable first international career hat-trick, in a 6-1 trouncing of Iceland women’s league top-flight club, UMF Selfoss, and she is seeking more to come.
Although Dike could not repeat Friday’s feat in Monday’s second match for the Falcons in Spain, as they continue their build-up to the World Cup, the American university graduate is excited to be back in the team.
The 24-year-old striker was a second-half substitute against Selfoss, and the former youth international justified her inclusion with a treble that helped the Falcons storm back from a goal down in Murcia, Spain.
Dike, who had not played for the Falcons after making her senior debut against Australia at the 2015 Women’s World Cup, is now eager to take her form into this year’s Mundial, where she believes the high level of team spirit and togetherness will boost Nigeria’s chances of excelling.
The Oklahoma City FC star admitted that her next target is to make the Falcons’ final squad to France 2019, which she believes should be possible with the hard work she has already put in, plus her ongoing efforts and the love she has received already from her teammates.
She enthused: “(I will) continue to connect with my teammates ahead of the World Cup. It’s a great feeling that everyone is welcoming me back.
“I missed a lot of the players that I’ve kept in contact with over the years. Not only teammates but we’re basically family now.
“It feels like we have a mix to be playing together on the pitch and I’m happy to be connecting with the whole squad as well.
“I am maintaining my fitness and keeping my eyes on the goal for the World Cup and doing everything with the summer in mind.
“I’ve continued to play for Oklahoma City FC and also train with the men’s team of the youth club that I practice with.
“I do personal training and my University coach has created a fitness packet for me to work on.”
