Nigerian billionaire, Femi Otedola has explained that he decided to dole out $50,000 for the medical bills of former national team captain and head coach, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu, because the ex-soccer star severed the country to the best of his ability.
Otedola’s gesture came after reports emerged that the 68-year-old Chukwu is down with prostate cancer, which affected his leg and he needed surgery in Enugu.
Chukwu requires attention in America, subsequent to the operation in the Enugu State capital, where he starred for Rangers International in his heyday and went on to serve with the club as coach and team manager, before taking up a new post as technical director.
Reports emerged at the weekend that Chukwu was in dire need of funds to boost his flight, treatment and recovery in the United States, which is said to have spurred Otedola into action.
The business mogul is said to have opted to take up Chukwu’s bill as ‘a token of support to a great Nigerian who served his country to the best of his ability.’
