Osaze Relishes FIFA Women’s World Cup Trophy Duty

Former Super Eagles striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie has stated joy with his appointment as an ambassador for the FIFA Women’s World Cup trophy tour in Nigeria.

Although many critics continue to slam global soccer governing body, FIFA, for choosing a male player, instead of several ex-Super Falcons’ stars, Osaze says his choice is because is his affinity with France.

Having played for several years with Lille Metropole of France, Osaze is of a view that he is very much reconigsable as Nigeria’s brand in the eye of female soccer fans set to storm the same country for the Mundial.

Based on his alliances with France, Osaze is one of 10 men listed as FIFA Legends for the global trophy tour, a role that he plays with Alex Scott (England), Marcel Desailly (France), Nadine Kessler (Germany), Michael Essien (Ghana), Laura Georges (France) and Gilberto Silva (Brazil).

Comprising 13 women and ten men, the Legends were selected for their qualities and commitment, which saw them overcome obstacles in the face of adversity on and off the pitch.

They are all part of the FIFA #DareToShine movement campaign, which is aimed at encouraging women and girls to push beyond all boundaries in to succeed across all areas of life.

The FIFA Legends have committed themselves to the task of raising the profile of women’s football and fans will be able to meet their heroes when squad members take part in almost 100 events across the world.

The events will include trophy tours, Host City activations and media appearances, in addition to attending matches during the tournament.

Secretary-general, Fatma Samoura expatiated: “Our superheroes will help reach a global audience of one billion and make the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019 our biggest and best yet – for players, for fans, for local communities and for the empowerment of girls and women.”

On his part, Osaze took to social media to reveal his passion for the appointment and admitted he is very thrilled to be part of the project and to attain the superhero status outlined by Samoura.

Osaze stated: “My kids are in love with this. They were thrilled when I eventually get around showing them the outfit.

“(They said) Is there anything more you want to tell us about yourself? Thought you disappeared often for golf, but now you are a superhero.”
