Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles’ captain, Ikouwem Udoh Utin has declared that the squad will do well at this year’s FIFA U-20 World Cup, as he says and his colleagues are determined to shine in Poland.
Speaking before the team’s flight to Germany at the weekend, as they head out to their final training camp before the competition begins May 23 in Poland, Utin pledged that the squad will do everything to excel.
Nigeria has been drawn in the same group with Qatar, USA and Ukraine at the 2019 Youth Mundial, after the seven-time African champs placed fourth at this year’s U-20 AFCON in Niger Republic.
Despite failing to make any of the top three spots on the continent, Paul Aigbogun’s side managed to pick Africa’s fourth and last ticket to Poland 2019 in February, and Utin is upbeat about their chances at the finals.
They will be in a race to beat the best so far by Nigeria at this level, being bronze at Moscow ’85 as well as silver at Saudi ’89 and Holland 2005, but Utin is not allowing any complexes becloud his ambitions.
The Enyimba of Aba left-back, who has full senior caps for Nigeria in the main Eagles and home-based squads, enthused that they will qualify from Group D at Poland 2019, where they will open their campaign against Qatar at Tychy City Stadium on May 24.
Utin pledged: “We will prepare very well in Germany so that we will give a good account of ourselves when the World Cup begins in Poland. I am confident that we can perform better at the world stage.”
