Barcelona Femeni of Spain attacker, Asisat Oshoala is picking positives from her side’s loss to Olympique Lyon Ladies of France in the UEFA Women’s Champions League final, as she says she is consoled in having achieved several unprecedented marks on the night in Budapest, Hungary.
Oshoala got Barca’s only goal in a 4-1 loss to the defending champions and most successful club in the competition’s history, such that the Super Falcons’ star is happy becoming the first Nigerian, nay Africa, to star at that level and even get her name on the scorers’ cards.
It is also during her time at Barca, on loan from Dalian Quanjian of China, that the club reached the UCL women’s final for the first time in their history, and she thus becomes the first and only player to score for them in the ultimate game among Europe’s elite female football clubs.
The 25-year-old Oshoala’s maiden goal in the Champions League, her eighth in 11 matches for Barca, came pretty late and unexpectedly, as she played as an 87th-minute substitute in Saturday’s final.
With Lluis Cortes’ side trailing 4-0, the gaffer called on Oshoala for her third appearance in the competition, and she made hay just two minutes later, as the three-time African Women Footballer of The Year hit target in the 89th minute.
Although she could not help her team win the trophy, ‘SuperDee’ is now relishing the chance of turning up at the FIFA Women’s World Cup next month among the rare class of players who will be at the event in France with a silver medal from playing in the biggest match at club level.
Oshoala, who has also played for Liverpool and Arsenal Ladies of England, stated: “I would like to appreciate this moment, FIRST EVER NIGERIAN /AFRICAN TO PLAY IN A uefa champions league final GAME.
“FIRST EVER NIGERIAN /AFRICAN PLAYER TO SCORE IN A uefa CHAMPIONS LEAGUE FINAL GAME, FIRST PLAYER TO score fc Barcelona FIRST uefa champions league final GOAL.”
