Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) if Ibadan have been handed a potentially tricky south-west derby against Osun United of Osogbo in what appears to be the standout fixture of the Federation Cup round of 64 matches.
The Oluyole Warriors’ forthcoming visit to Osogbo, as well as Jigawa Golden Stars at home against Insurance of Benin City, were the crunchy ties that emerged from the draw on Monday, while the women’s round of 25 pool also had a number of eye catching fixtures to boot.
While speaking at the draw in Abuja, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) deputy general-secretary, Dr. Emmanuel Ikpeme praised the Fed Cup sponsor, AITEO Oil for restoring glamour to the country’s oldest contest.
On his part, NFF director of competitions, Bola Oyeyode explained that all matches will be on knockout basis this year, due to a transition status of the season and CAF’s deadline for Nigeria’s flag-bearers to emerge in the continental competition, Confederation Cup, which starts in August.
Oyeyode added that 64 teams will compete in this year’s Federation Cup, among which are 19 clubs from the top-flight Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), as they seek places in the men’s Round of 32.
A total of 25 teams will compete in the women competition, which, due to their lower numbers, will only start when the men commence healthy hostilities in the second round.
