Lagos-based high profile socio-recreation centre, Ikoyi Club 1938 has a roll call of 100 players at this year’s edition of the Zenith Bank Tennis Championship, which began on Tuesday and will run till June 1.
Chairman of the club’s tennis section, Bimbo Okubena said they have received the highest number of participants in the five-year old history of the tournament, but promised that they are up to the task.
Okubena said the essence of the competition is to have fun and create an avenue for camaraderie, while winners will go home with trophies and vouchers which can be redeemed at Mega Plaza.
He revealed that members of the club will participate in nine events, being men’s singles Group A and B, ladies’ singles, veteran singles and super-veteran singles.
Also included in this year’s line of events are men’s doubles, veteran doubles, ladies double and team contest.
Okubena said all the participants had gone through vigorous training, in order to make the tourney very competitive.
He thanked Zenith Bank for presenting the section with an electronic scoreboard, which is the first by any club in the whole of West Africa.
