Former Super Eagles top striker, Victor Okechukwu Agali has given the team’s head coach, Gernot Rohr as ‘vote of confidence’ to do a good job for Nigeria at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Although many Nigerians are critical of the Eagles’ chances of doing well in Egypt, Agali is of a view that the three-time champions will do well, simply because Rohr knows how to set up a winning squad.
Agali went on to declare further during a chat with Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that Rohr has the experience of lining out a team at the continental soccer showpiece, because he has been there before, such that the gaffer’s experience should come to bear on the Eagles’ hopes.
Although Agali admitted that it will not be a stroll in the park for the Eagles, he reckons that they have a light group to start with, and should be able to go far with Rohr’s expertise.
With the Eagles heading back to the AFCON scene after missing the past two editions, Rohr has repeatedly stated that Nigeria, now ranked third in Africa, should not be rated among the favourites, which Agali admits could be the only hurdle that the squad will contend with next month.
Agali, who is now Rohr’s head scout, added: “It’s going to be difficult, because we are coming back after a long absence, and other teams are already well-grounded.
“However, we are the favourites in our group, which should give us a good way to start and settle down in the competition.
“I trust our coach, Gernot Rohr, because he knows what he is doing and he knows how to set up a winning team.
“He has been to the Nations Cup before, he has the experience, and he knows how to set up his team to do well.”
