The Super Eagles may end up playing a 3-5-2 formation in all their matches at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations, as the squad continue to build-up on strategies, tactics and techniques during training in Asaba.
Checks at the Eagles’ training sessions reveal that coach of the side, Gernot Rohr appears bent on lining his squad out with two forwards playing as wing backs, three central defenders at the back and two outright strikers upfront, with one leading as the arrowhead.
This approach has led to wingers like Samuel Chukwueze, Henry Onyekuru, Moses Simon and Samuel Kalu lining out from the deep in three training sessions of the Eagles in Asaba, as if to suggest they will end up playing as wing-backs supporting the defence during the upcoming AFCON.
Rohr hinted that he invited more forwards to the Eagles’ preparation camp in Asaba because he wanted to try out options whereby the wingers would be made to play from lines in defence, while the top strikers will be freed up front to rain goals.
The out-and-out strikers Rohr is thinking about at Odion Jude Ighalo, Victor Osimhen and Paul Onuachu, with Kelechi Iheanacho, Onyekuru, Ahmed Musa and Chukwueze rated as support-strikers, while John Ugochukwu Ogu, Oghenekaro Etebo and John Mikel Obi can back the attack through the middle.
While noting that all players will in the team will have to understand his tactics to the fullest, Rohr also pointed out that Simon was regularly deployed as a wing-back last season with Levante of Spain, while Kalu played same role with the Eagles in a 1-1 draw away to South Africa during the AFCON qualifiers.
Rohr expatiated: ”We have wingers who can play as fullbacks, like we did against South Africa.
“(That we did) with Kalu, who was on the right side, right full back and a winger at the same time.
”When we play 3-5-2 like we did against Iceland at the World Cup or we did in South Africa.
“There’s also a possibility for Simon Moses to play like he did in his club, on the left side. So, we have full backs which is also very good tactically.
”Then we have three strikers, Ighalo the goalscorer. We have Osimhen, who did well with his club and is one for the future.
”I’m happy to have this good quality. So, let’s go with offensive spirit to the AFCON because we want to win our games.”
