Nigeria’s senior football team, Super Eagles got straight down to real business on Monday, ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, as the squad lined out for full training few hours after landing in Ismailia, Egypt.
With AFCON 2019 set to kick off in Cairo, Egypt in a fortnight, Gernot Rohr and his wards know they cannot afford to waste any time, and the squad shook off any manner of jet lag to hit the ground running at their final training base before heading to their matches venue in Alexandria.
The Eagles hit the training ground Monday evening, despite having only landed in Ismailia in the early hours of same day and the players all look happy and active during their first training session, starting from 5pm.
They flew into the Egyptian coastal city on a chartered plane, which also conveyed players of Zimbabwe’s players from Asaba, where both teams battled to a goalless draw under torrential rain on Saturday.
The plane refueled at Aminu Kano International Airport, in the northern Nigerian city of Kano, before heading to Ismailia, where the Eagles’ team will stay at Hotel Mercure for one week before moving to Alexandria, where they will play all their Group B matches.
The players had a recovery session took place at Stephen Keshi Stadium on Sunday morning under the guidance of Gernot Rohr, who told them they would get straight down to work from their first day in Ismailia.
The Eagles will play Senegal in a friendly this Sunday, June 16 in Ismailia, before heading to Alexandria the following day, and they will have their Group B opener against Burundi on June 22.
They will then battle Guinea and end their group stage games against Madagascar, June 26 and June 30 respectively, at the 32nd continental tournament taking place in four Egyptian cities from June 21 to July 19.
Eagles’ media officer, Toyin Ibitoye added an exciting angle to the flight to Ismalia, as he disclosed on social media that a female pilot was in full charge of the peaceful and successful journey to The Land of Pharaohs.
Ibitoye stated in his post: “Take a bow Captain Simi of @flyairpeace. Her excellent handling of the @NGSuperEagles flight to Egypt ahead of the #TotalAFCON2019 camping in Ismalia was commended by everyone. Top quality.”
