Kaizer Chiefs of South Africa goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi has been cited as a shinning spot in the club, following his inclusion in the Super Eagles’ final squad list to this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Following confirmation of Akpeyi’s name in Nigeria’s official roster for Egypt 2019, Kaizer Chiefs rolled out commemorative words to celebrate the former Heartland of Owerri and Warri Wolves of Delta State keeper.
Despite critical comments trailing his form in Nigeria’s colours, Akpeyi was listed on Saturday by Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr for the country’s return to the continental showpiece, following their absence at the past two editions, after winning the 2013 title in South Africa.
That is the country where Akpeyi plies his trade and he is now one of seven players from his club who will be at AFCON 2019, which seen as huge image booster for Amakhosi, after going through a season many of their fans say they would love to forget.
With Akpeyi inclusive, Kaizer Chiefs have seven of their stars confirmed for their respective countries at AFCON 2019, where The Glamour Boys’ players will have the chance to redeem themselves for their nations after a torrid campaign for domestically.
During Akpeyi’s first half season with the club, following his transfer from Chippa United mid-campaign, Chiefs finished outside the top eight and with their lowest points tally since 1985, while also failing to land a trophy, but all of the club’s foreign African players, aside from Willard Katsande made the cut for their respective nations going to Egypt 2019.
