Lagos-base billionaire, Femi Otedola has taken another massive step in philanthropic gesture for Nigerian ex-internationals, as the oil tycoon has now moved in to foot the medical bills for former goalkeeper, Peter Fregene.
So soon after dolling out $50,000 and other incentives to aid treatment for ex-Eagles’ captain and coach, ‘Chairman’ Christian Chukwu in London, Otedola has gone one better in rising to the support of Fregene, who has been bedridden for months.
Fregene, who was Nigeria’s goalkeeper in the late 1960’s, all through the 1970s and the early 1980s, was a member of the then Green Eagles’ squad that featured at the 1982 African Nations Cup in Libya
The Delta State born legend and former Stationery Stores of Lagos shot-stopper, who was also in the Nigerian team that participated at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City, current needs urgent financial support to help him get proper medical attention.
However, his prayers have come true, as Otedola, who is also chairman of Forte Oil Plc, has stepped in to foot the medical bills of the 72-year-old Fregene, who has been bedridden since 2001.
After sending aides to check Fregene in Sapele, Delta State, Otedola gave directives to move him to Lagos on Friday, to commence immediate treatment at Reddington Hospital in Lagos, for which the ex-keeper was airlifted from Benin City Airport in Edo State early same morning.
Mega Sports esteemed broadcaster and 27 July Limited Sports Network managing director, Bimbo Adeola broke the news Friday, as he eulogised Otedola for showing a rare shape of untiring multiple philanthropy for ex-internationals, who brought glory to Nigeria in years past.
The former general manager of Brila FM, who cut his sports broadcasting teeth with Clapperboard TV, went on to lace his post on social media with superlative adjectives for ‘The Good Samaritan,’ while also raining prayers on the son of former Lagos State governor, Sr Michael Otedola.
Adeola posted: “Femi Otedola has done it again! He’s agreed to foot the medical bills of the former Nigeria goalkeeper, who has been bedridden since 2001.
“The 72-year-old Fregene, who is in Sapele, will be in Lagos this morning for medical evaluation and treatment.”
