Iwobi Feels Heat Of Crunch Talks With Emery

Arsenal of England attacker, Alex Iwobi has been cited at the centre of no holds-barred comments by The Gunners’ coach, Unai Emery, with the Nigerian star feeling the heat of the coach’s words during talks with the squad right after their last match of the season.

With defeat in the UEFA Europa League turning the squad’s season into a disappointing anti-climax, after so much promise at the beginning, Emery slated into Iwobi and his colleague for falling short.

Though the Super Eagles’ star, who is heading for his maiden outing at the Africa Cup of Nations, starting this Saturday against Burundi, scored in the Europa League infal, his efforts fell short in a shambolic 4-1 loss.

The heavy defeat by their London rivals, Chelsea, left Emery fuming, and he ended up reeling out caustic scolding words at Iwobi and other players in the team, who again failed to win any piece of silverware and ended up outside the English Premier League’s top-four bracket.

It means Arsenal are again doomed to playing in the second-tier continental competition in the coming season, much to the disdain of Emery, who had been hoping for a massive turn around in his first season at Emirates Stadium.

That disappointment formed the basis of his verbal attack on Iwobi et al, as Emery held face-to-face talks with every single Arsenal player at the end of the season, and The Mirror reports that the gaffer’s session with each player, one after the other, lasted between 15 and 30 minutes.

The Spanish tactician felt compelled to speak with each member of his squad after a season which saw them lose the Europa League final and miss out on Champions League qualification.

Emery has done the same thing in the past, but it came as a ‘culture shock’ to the Arsenal squad, as the players had to return to London Colney before departing for holiday and international duty.
