Nigeria’s top female sprinter, Blessing Okagbare-Ighotegunor returned to the venue of her 2010 debut in the IAAF Diamond League in Stanford, USA to record her first 200m victory of this year’s elite competition, as she emerged ahead of the chasing pack in the women’s race on Sunday.
Running from lane 8, Okagbare, who recorded her first victory of this season’s League by emerging top of the 100m in Rabat, Morocco two weeks ago, finished with a season’s best of 22.05 seconds in the 200m at Cobb Track & Angell Field in Stanford.
Double Olympic champion, Elaine Thompson raced to second in 22.21 seconds while British Sprinter and double European Champion, Dina Asher Smith finished third in 22.42 seconds.
Dutch sensation and reigning World Champion over the distance, Daphne Schippers who finished 5th in 11.32 seconds at the IAAF Diamond League in Rabat settled for 6th in 22.62 seconds.
Only Thompson, with a time of 22.00 seconds has run faster than Okagbare in the 200m this season, but the Nigerian star’s time on Sunday is the second fastest in the world this year.
