Villarreal of Spain winger, Samuel Chukwueze has declared that he is so happy with the decision he took in dumping an offer to join Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles for the FIFA U-20 World Cup, while opting instead for an appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Although he has started a single match for the Super Eagles at Egypt 2019, which came in the opening group game against Burundi, Chukwueze insists he took the right decision, and equally thanks his club’s buff for leading him int he right direction.
He disclosed in a chat with SportsDay that the technical crew and club officials of Villarreal actually advised him to choose the AFCON ahead of the U-20 World Cup, a decision he says he is not regretting in any way.
With the possibility of him now returning to the Eagles’ starting line-up for Saturday’s round of 16 clash with Cameroon, Chukwueze says he is looking excitedly up to another opportunity to shine for Nigeria.
He did indeed dazzle in his first ever AFCON match, but many critics argued he was playing to the gallery with his runs down the Eagles’ right wing, which the Chile 2015 FIFA U-117 World Cup revelation says he will work to improve on if given the chance against Cameroon on Saturday.
Chukwueze told SportsDay: “What can I say. First, I think my club made a good choice for allowing me to play only in AFCON.
“I am only asking my fans to continue praying for the team and to give us all their support till the end of the competition.”
