Ezenwa: We Are Not Under Any Pressure In Egypt

Katsina United goalkeeper, Ikechukwu Ezenwa has declared that he and other players in the Super Eagles are not under pressure at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, as he says they have already put behind them the pain and disappointment of losing to Madagascar.

Although the former Enyimba of Aba and FC Ifeanyiubah of Nnewi shot-stopper also admitted that losing 2-0 to the debutantes in Nigeria’s last group match was a huge setback to their ambitions at Egypt 2019, he is happy that the Eagles returned to winning ways against Cameroon.

He reckonbed that Saturday’s victory showed that the Eagles have shaken off the lethargy of their shock defeat by Madagascar and insisted that they have to put the past behind them all distractions, in order to focus on beating South Africa in Wednesday quarter-final fixture.

Ezenwa stated during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that the only thing on his mind and that of the other Nigerian players is how to beat Bafana Bafana, and he promised that the players will go out smoking.

The former home-based Eagles’ captain, however, noted that the team committed several errors in the loss to Madagascar, during which he was beaten twice with goals that came off defensive laxity, but added that all mistakes from that game were corrected before Saturday’s win.

He enthused further that their efforts will yield the desired dividends at Cairo International Stadium, with a ticket into the semi-finals coming at the end of the last whistle, but acknowledged that it will not be an easy outing against the 1996 champions and 1998 runners-up.

Ezenwa stated: “We are not under pressure (for Wednesday’s match). The most important things is for us to focus on the present and plan for the future. We want victory against South Africa, and we will go for it.”
