Ighalo played the role alongside Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr, as the hotel rolled out their warmest cheers to celebrate with the Nigerian team and congratulate them on their victory over South Africa in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
Victory over South Africa took Rohr’s record with Nigeria to 20 wins in 34 matches, of which he has drawn five and lost nine, after which the hotel’s management presented a big cake for reaching the last four of Africa’s biggest and most prestigious football championship.
The manager, Atef Wilson, on behalf of the management presented the cake to Rohr and Ighalo, who received on behalf of the team, amidst lots smiles, clinking of glasses, pumping of palms and much gaiety.
Rohr, though, used the moment to tell his players that the celebrations are now over, as they have to concentrate on the semi-finals fixture this Sunday, and charged his wards to be focused and fully committed to the task of overcoming another cracker at Cairo International Stadium.
“The next match in a championship is always the toughest, so it is always important to approach it that way.
“That is why we must now forget what we achieved against South Africa in our quarter final match and start to build up towards the semi final.
“There is no time to rest on our oars. We must make all the sacrifices we can now to achieve our objectives at this tournament.
“We must stay focused and be fully committed,” said Rohr, who earlier took his team back to Aerosport pitch on Thursday morning to begin training for Sunday’s last-four encounter.
