New arrival at West Bromwich Albion of England, Semilore Ajayi has expressed satisfaction with his first match at the club he joined only last weekend, saying it was great to get the chance to don The Baggies’ shirt so early, although it came in a friendly that was, incidentally, against his former club, Rotherham United.
Although he gave away a foul that led to Rotherham’s goal in the 1-1 draw at New York Stadium, Ajayi said he is happy with the reception he has enjoyed so far at The Hawthorns, and believes the match has further concretised his chances of settling down fast.
He stated as much after getting his debut with The Baggies in the pre-season friendly, which came less than a week after Ajayi completed the switch from The Millers, but he endured a difficult return to his former hunting fields on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old defender-turned-midfielder, who selaed a four-year at The Hawthorns on Saturday, was handed a starting role against the side he played for last season in the English Championship, and score seven goals, with a play of the month award to show for his rise in form.
However, Ajayi’s efforts in Tuesday’s friendly went awry, as his tackle on Rotherham’s fellow-Nigerian-born player, Freddie Ladapo led to a penalty, which the fouled lad calmly slotted home for The Millers’ lead.
Ajayi, though, got a reprieve when Albion’s substitute, Dara O’Shea got of the bench to rescue the day for Slaven Bilic’s side after heading home Filip Krovinovic’s cross for the equalising goal.
Ajayi will hope to put his shaky start behind him when West Brom take on Bournemouth in another friendly on Friday, and then do even better when The Baggies open their 2019/20 English Championship campaign against Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Saturday, August 3.
He took to social media to reveal his emotions after the debut, stating: “Felt great to put on this jersey for the first time.
“Grateful for the reception I’ve received since joining. Thank you all for your support. WBA.”
