New signing at SV Hamburg of Germany, Xavier Amaechi has described the deal that takes him away from Arsenal of England as the right step towards perfect conditions at club that cares for young players.
After failing to get a nod into the main team at Emirates Stadium for five years, Amaechi has taken the option of seeking to set his professional career on an accelerated track in the German second-tier league, and says he has arrived at the right club that will help him achieve his goals.
Such is the excitement from Amaechi, after the Nigerian-born winger sealed his exit from Arsenal on a four-year deal, as the 18-year-old England youth international passed a medical on Saturday and becomes Hamburg’s 11th summer signing.
Amaechi was beaming from ear-to-ear, after The Gunners confirmed that he has joined the German 2 Bundesliga side on a permanent deal, which is a step forward from his highest point at Arsenal, when he traveled with the first team to Azerbaijan for the Europa League final against Chelsea but was omitted from the match day squad.
Although Amaechi did not make a single appearance for Arsenal’s first team in a competitive match, he was also in the traveling squad to Dubai for pre-season and featured in a friendly against Al-Nasr.
Despite an injury that stalled his progress last season, Amaechi recorded 14 appearances in the Premier League 2, with four goals and five assists to show, but that did not stop Arsenal from selling him to Hamburg for a fee of around €2.5m plus add-ons and a sell-on clause.
However, The Gunners did not leave any room open for him to stage a dramatic return in future, as they did not insert a buy-back option for the youngster, who turned down approaches from Barcelona of Spain, Hertha Berlin and Bayern Munich of Germany, Inter Milan of Italy, OGC Nice of France and a number of sides across the divisions in England.
Hamburg’s tipping point was in them being able to convince Amaechi that he will be a regular starter with their main team this season, which was something all other clubs clearly could not promise him.
He ended up arriving in time for Hamburg’s pre-season friendly against SV Darmstadt 98 at 13:30 on Sunday and Amaechi, who joined Arsenal from Fulham Academy at age 12, said he was happy with what he saw.
Amaechi told Hamburg’s official website: “The conditions here really are perfect. I’m really impressed by the team, the fans and the stadium. I think it’s a big chance for me to play for this club.”
