Iwobi: I Could Not Reject Everton’s Offer

Everton of England summer arrival, Alex Iwobi has confessed that he accepted to make the switch from more fancied Arsenal because he could not resit the offer dangled before him by The Toffees.

Everton have a strong history of Nigerian players in their squad, dating back to Joseph Ikpo Yobo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Victor Anichebe, which also provided some emotions for Iwob i’s move to Goodison Park, but the Super Eagles’ playmaker admits it was mostly because of the money.

The 23-year-old eventually moved from Emirates Stadium to Goodison Park outfit on a five-year deal worth an initial £28m, which could rise to £35m with potential add-ons, and the fast-rising dazzler, who went on to make 149 senior appearances for The Gunners, scoring 15 goals, says he is happy to make the move to Everton, where he wants to come of age.

Iwobi said he is still excited, after he teamed up with Everton on transfer deadline day, becoming the seventh summer signing by Marco Silva, following earlier arrivals by Jean Philippe Gbamin, Moise Kean, Andre Gomes, Fabian Delph, goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and Djibril Sidibe.

He is now hoping to equally learn, like all other young players under Silva, as the Everton boss believes Iwobi’s versatility presents him with plenty of attacking options but he is demanding more goals from him.

The new arrival did not feature in the opening weekend goalless draw against Crystal Palace on Saturday, but he hopes to feature at a point in the second game this weekend, against Watford, as he fully settles down among the other new additions and older regulars with Silva.

After finally ending his 15-year spell with The Gunners, which he joined as a five-year-old in their famous Hale End Academy, Iwobi said he now wants to make a name for himself and take on more responsibilities.

Iwobi admitted: “The offer was too attractive for me to turn down. The manager was telling me: ‘There is a spot for you, we will take care of you’. Basically, all the things you want to hear as a player.

“He has given me the confidence I will do well. I am ready for a new challenge and chapter in my life.

“I always had that youngster tag at Arsenal, so hopefully with this move I am able to make a name for myself in the Premier League and create history with Everton.

“Hopefully I will be able to take on a bit more responsibility and add something to the team as well.

“It is exciting times for Everton. I was able to look at the transfers and players they have brought in – some great talent.

“It is not just me. There were quality players here before and they are still here. The manager has worked with Richarlison for a long while and made a name for him.

“Hopefully he can do the same for not just me but Moise Kean and a few others who came in, too.”
