Nigeria’s female basketball national team, D’Tigress have been drawn against Mozambique and DR Congo in Group A of the African qualifiers for the pre-qualifying tournament of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games; while Senegal will face Mali and Angola in Group B.
This came after a draw on Sunday in Dakar, Senegal, during which all top six teams at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship were pooled to feature in the qualifying tournament.
The six teams will play a round-robin format, with the winner of Group A facing the second team in Group B, while the winner of Group B will come up against the second ranked team in Group A in the semi-finals.
The semi-final winners will automatically advance to the 16-nation FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (WOQT) where teams will be divided into four groups in February 2020.
The FIBA Women’s AfroBasket champion previously automatically got an Olympics’ ticket, but the new rule states that the top three teams from each of the three WOQT groups will qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games.
African qualifiers for the Pre-Qualifying Tournament of Tokyo 2020 will take place from November 14 to 17 at a country yet to be determined.
