Omotayo: Africa Games Gold Good For My Career

Fast-rising table tennis youngster, Olajide Omotayo has admitted that winning gold in the men’s singles of this year’s Africa Games in Morocco is a huge boost to his career, especially as he beat three top players en route to achieving the feat.

Omotayo acknowledged that it was not an easy route for him, as he had to overcome Egypt’s Ahmed Saleh as well as the highly-rated Nigerian duo of Segun Toriola and Aruna Quadri, from the quarter-final to the final on Thursday, which he said brought out the best in him.

He, however, added during Mega Sports on Star 101.5 FM, Lagos that it was not just his ability that stood him out, but a lot of help from God, who he believes boosted the determination he gave in every game.

A citation for the 24-year-old Omotayo, who is currently ranked 136 on men’s world ratings of International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF), described him as is an exciting player, who executes his skills in an uninhibited manner, and he showed early at the 12th Games in Rabat, Morocco that he would go on to cause many upsets.

The dreadlocks-wearing ping pong star went on to thank God for making his victory possible, and equally stated his deepest level of appreciation to Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) for selecting him among the set of players to represent the country.

Omotayo declared: “It’s a big deal for me winning this gold medal, especially as I had to overcome Saleh, Toriola and Quadri to get it.

“Those are big players in this game, and beating them is not an easy thing at all. That’s why this god medal is a very big thing for my career.

“By the grace of God, it’s not going to end here. I want to thank Him for giving me the energy to win this medal.

“I also want to thank the federation for giving me the opportunity to play for Nigeria. I am grateful to everybody that made this possible.”
