Minister of sports, Sunday Akinlabi Dare has promised that the Nigerian men’s senior basketball national team, D’Tigers and other sectors of the country will see better days ahead in all their outings and endeavours.
Reacting to the recent feat of D’Tigers in booking an automatic ticket to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan, after winning their last three matches at the FIBA World Cup in China, Dare said he was impressed by the team’s performance and promised to support them to achieve more.
The minister said it was remarkable that D’Tigers achieved the only ticket available to Africa at China 2019, which the journalist-turned-telecommunications expert admitted is a huge point of honour and recognition for Nigeria.
He went on to add that D’Tigers have set a high standard that other teams representing the country should strive to emulate, and went on to pledge that the ministry of sports will do everything to keep the squad together and provide adequate welfare to make them happy.
He took to social media to reveal his reactions to D’Tigrers’ success and outline plans for a rosy future, ending with a declaration that other teams from various sports the country is involved in will also receive adequate attention from the ministry and federal government.
Dare posted: “With a score of China 73-86 Nigeria, Nigeria’s D’Tigers secured Africa’s sole Olympic ticket to Tokyo 2020. We will strive to keep them together as a team. Football, Basket Ball, Athletics, Boxing, Weightlifting, T-Tennis, Canoeing etc will engage our attention.”
