Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) secretary-general, Dr Mohammed Sanusi has declared that the performances of the Super Eagles and Olympic Eagles on their respective matches on Tuesday gave signs that the future is bright for the country in the round leather game.
Although the senior team gave up a two goal lead to eventually settle for a 2-2 draw away to Ukraine in an international friendly, Sanusi said the players’ fighting spirit is worthy of praise, and noted that same was the case with the Olympic Eagles, who beat Sudan 5-0 same day in the second leg of their Africa championship qualifier in Asaba.
The NFF scribe pointed out that both teams are loaded with young players, especially the Eagles, where many rookies and debutantes were on display at Dnipro-Arena, which he stressed is evocative of the fact that many glorious years lie ahead of the Nigerian national team.
He also praised the Olympic Eagles’ performance, not only for the high score win, but also for the smoothness, determination and hunger with which they romped to victory and picked a ticket to the third edition of the African U-23 Cup of Nations, from which they will aim to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Sanusi added with glee: “The 5-0 victory was very sweet, but what made it sweeter was the way it was delivered.
“From that game and from the delivery of the Super Eagles in the friendly with Ukraine later that night which ended 2-2, we can confidently say that the future of the Nigeria senior team is bright.
“We had a very young team out there in Ukraine as a result of the forced withdrawal of some of the old breed, yet they delivered a heartwarming performance that everyone was proud of.”
