President Muhammadu Buhari has declared that he is expecting Nigeria’s cadet national team, Golden Eaglets to win an ‘unparalleled’ sixth VFIFA U-17 World Cup title, as he was enthralled by their opening 4-2 win against Hungary in Brazil.
Although the Eaglets had to battle from behind twice before they carried the day eventually on Saturday night, Buhari said it was a show of confidence, commitment and determination that made Manu Garba’s wards storm back to win.
The president went on to congratulate the Eaglets’ players, coaches and officials for what he tagged a fantastic beginning to their campaign at Brazil 2019, as he believes they showed signs of their ability to clinch the trophy for a record-extending sixth time.
Buhari added in a message to the team that they are assured of his continuing personal support and that of all Nigerians for the entire period of the championship, but urged them to continue with the best of their efforts, demonstrate the resilient spirit and bring the cup home.
In the statement issued by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari added that he will personally monitor the Eaglets’ progress at Brazil 2019 and urged the handlers to be sensitive to the youngsters’ needs, in order to augment their desire to bring honour to their fatherland.
Buhari stated: “It was a wonderful display that I am very proud of. You showed that there is nothing that cannot be achieved with determination and perseverance. I have followed your journey leading to your arrival in Brazil for the competition.
“I have equally noted your determination and confidence throughout your preparations. I have no doubt in my mind that you are determined to win the competition for an unparalleled sixth time.”
